Fremont, CA (PRWEB) April 6, 2010

The JM Internet Group, a leader in providing Search Engine Optimization (SEO) courses online, has released their latest marketing survey, ?Google SEO / AdWords Survey Results: How Well do Small Businesses Know Google?? The survey polls nearly two hundred small businesspeople and marketers as to their general attitudes towards Google, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and AdWords. In addition, it questions them to rate their internal skillsets on SEO and AdWords.

?As a provider of online SEO training, we wanted to know both business satisfaction with Google as well as the depth of knowledge that vendors have about SEO and AdWords,? clarified Dr. Jason McDonald, SEO Director, JM Internet Group. ?Our results indicate that the ?Devils? are in the SEO and AdWords details. Google is well liked and well understood on a general level, but on specific levels there is a lot of anxiety and confusion in the small business community.?

SEO: How Well do Businesspeople Know Search Engine Optimization?

SEO stands for ?Search Engine Optimization.? In layman?s terms SEO is about how to get a company to the top of Google?s ?natural,? ?organic,? or ?free? results. On a general level, respondents felt barely adequate in their SEO knowledge. Questioned about specifics, but, only for keywords and rank measurement did a majority of respondents deem themselves as ?skilled? or ?extremely skilled.? For all other aspects, a majority of respondents judged themselves as ?not skilled? or ?not skilled at all!? The greatest confusion exists in link building and news creation, the former being a rather complex task and the latter being a new opportunity as Google moves towards real-time search.

AdWords: How Well do Businesspeople Know AdWords?

AdWords is Google?s pay-per-click advertising program. Advertisers bid to have their ads appear on Google and on Google?s affiliate or ?content? network. Satisfaction was very high comparing Google SEO and AdWords to alternative media. In terms of specifics, respondents rated themselves the most highly with respect to writing excellent ad copy (43.5%) and the least skilled with respect to managing Google?s content network (11.9%), which is a Google advertising platform that places one?s ads on portals, blogs, magazines, newspapers, and other third party websites. Questioned generally about Quality Score, which is the linchpin concept in terms of improving AdWords ROI, the results are abysmal. More than 75% rated themselves as ?not skilled? or ?not skilled at all!?

Google Brand Equity

Most polls to date focus on general users of Google rather than businesses seeking to get listed, for free, on Google via SEO or participate in Google?s paid advertising program, AdWords. Within this more narrow (and arguably more vital) community, Google has very strong general brand equity. Fissures of dissatisfaction exist but vis-a-vis Google customer service and its openness regarding how SEO relates to AdWords. With respect to AdWords, all categories were positive, but the strongest negatives occurred with respect to whether Google did a ?excellent job? explaining how AdWords work. 41.1% disagreed with that statement. Second in the line of negatives was whether Google had helpful customer service, with 36.2% disagreeing with that statement.

With respects to SEO, but, 59.4% believe that Google does not do a excellent job explaining free SEO opportunities available via Google, with a very significant 16.1% feeling this strongly. 54.4% believe that Google does not make it simple to combine AdWords with SEO, and here 8.9% feel this strongly.
